The firm was founded in 1994 by Peter Terry, P.E., P.T.O.E. and Bruce Gustin, P.L.S.. Both had been employed by an international civil engineering consulting firm that had aspirations toward large, international projects. Peter and Bruce favored providing personal, professional services to the local Lehigh Valley / Eastern Pennsylvania Region. When their previous employer announced the closing of its Allentown office, Benchmark was off and running.
Peter Terry continued to develop his specialty of Traffic and Transportation engineering by completing his Masters degree at Villanova University in 1994. After completing his degree, he accepted adjunct faculty positions with both Lehigh University and Lafayette College's Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Peter Terry's professional experience includes three and one half years with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, five years working with consultants, and as the president of Benchmark since 1994. His experiences at NJDOT were with a planning group developing roadway alignments and performing traffic analysis for new roadways, bypasses, and major upgrades to corridors. In 1999 Peter became a certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer. The certification was developed by the Institute of Transportational Engineers who have specific traffic engineering expertise.
Bruce Gustin has over twenty-four years of experience in surveying and civil engineering. His strong surveying background is rooted in his ten years of field experience in Colorado and Oregon where he established boundaries and prepared control for surveys of major landholdings. He has utilized his CADD experience on projects ranging from solar home design to land developments including residential, commercial and institutional projects. During his career, his experience includes twelve years of responsibility for over 275 architectural, surveying, land development, municipal, transportation, and civil engineering projects. He currently manages the CADD and surveying functions for Benchmark.
As it has grown in size, the company has reinforced the importance of each person's contribution. Every employee is empowered to assist in the growth and guidance of the company. Each employee truly is Benchmark Civil Engineering Services, Inc.
